A van that hopped up onto a sidewalk struck and killed a woman in her 80s and critically injured a man in his 60s, according to Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh.
The incident happened around noon on Thursday. Officials say a blue van lost control at the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Broadway.
A woman in her 80s was sitting on a bench at the bus stop when she was hit. The man was on a scooter.
Officials say that the crash is currently being ruled an accident. Police officials were questioning the van’s driver, but there was no word that the driver was facing any charges.
Residents in the area tell News 12 New Jersey that the area is a very busy intersection.
“It could have happened to me. If it was around 3 p.m., all the kids would be there from East Side High School, and there could be more people dead,” says Benjamin Melandez.
It was not immediately clear why the van jumped the curb.
