The Paterson City Council renamed a street after former NBA player and Paterson naïve Rory Sparrow in honor of Black History Month.
Community members and leaders gathered on East 35th Street between Alabama Avenue and Market Street – an area that will now be named Rory Sparrow Way.
Sparrow began his 12-year NBA career with the New Jersey Nets and played for several times, including the New York Knicks and Miami Heat.
He says that after living in many places around the country, he is glad to be receiving honors in his hometown.
“I thank the community that raised me…there’s something about Paterson. There’s something about New Jersey,” Sparrow says.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh says the dedication of Rory Sparrow Way is a fitting tribute to a beloved Patersonian and NBA legend.
