The owner of 12 dogs found locked in cages inside an abandoned home in Paterson will surrender to authorities on Saturday, according to the Passaic County SPCA.
The dogs were found inside a home on 17th Avenue in Paterson Tuesday. Officials say that they were emaciated, had matted fur and were covered in their own filth.
“Some of them had mats on their bodies that were bigger than the dogs themselves and heavier than the dogs themselves,” says shelter worker Frannie Laurita. “The mats were so bad, some of them weren’t able to see, unable to walk, and they were stained in urine and feces.
The dogs were taken to the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in Oakland, where they have been cleaned and cared for.
The dogs will be getting blood tests and have to gain some weight before they can be put up for adoption.
