Authorities have released a new surveillance video possibly connected to the shooting death of a beloved Newark community leader.
Imam Hassan Sharif was killed outside Masjid Muhammad at South Orange Avenue and Camden Street in Newark on the morning of Jan. 3, 2024.
Officials say that surveillance video released on Monday shows a man walking in the area at the time of the shooting. They say that they believe that this man is connected to the crime. They say that he has a distinctive walk and hope the public will be able to identify him.
Officials say that Sharif had been threatened at gunpoint months prior to the incident, but it is not clear if the two situations are related.
“We’re hoping to tie whatever evidence we have with regard to any prior incidents, we’re hoping to tie that together, but we need additional information, additional help from the public in order to tie those threads together,” says Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II.
It was not immediately clear if the imam was targeted.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $35,000 for information leading to an arrest.
They are asking anyone with information to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877 TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. Officials say all calls will be kept confidential.
