Authorities in one Ocean County community are issuing an alert to residents after rattlesnakes were spotted in the area.

Several timber rattlesnakes have been sighted in the Roosevelt City section of Manchester Township.

Experts say the endangered reptiles are present in New Jersey, but the sightings in residential areas are unusual. However, the snakes are poisonous and could attack if they feel threatened.

State officials urge people not to approach the animals and call wildlife authorities if one is spotted.
