The PATH Hoboken Station will close for nearly a month starting in January for major upgrades.

Representatives from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spoke about the plan with the public on Tuesday.

Thousands of commuters taking the PATH train every day will now have to find other forms of transportation. Due to significant track and station upgrades, the Hoboken station will close on Jan. 30 at 11:59 p.m. and re-open on Feb. 25 at 5 a.m.

PATH officials say they're working with the NY Waterway and New Jersey Transit to accommodate nearly 20,000 daily riders.

Rebecca Riehl, the assistant director of PATH Passenger Services, explained that other options include the New Jersey Transit Light Rail or a free PATH shuttle bus operating between Hoboken, Newport and Exchange.

From there, customers can ride PATH from Newport or Exchange. There will be additional PATH service during weekdays to the World Trade Center and 33 Street, and customers will be cross-honored on the ferry.

"One of the reasonings that went behind having this closure during February is it actually is our second lowest ridership month of the year." She said commuters see the heaviest crowds on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays," says Riehl.

Despite their efforts, PATH officials are telling riders to prepare for crowds.

"We've worked with the ferry to add additional boats and also with New Jersey Transit to add an additional 126 services. They're also adding additional Light Rail service during those weekday rush hours," says Riehl.

Another in-person meeting will be held Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Jersey City at Exchange Place. Riders can speak directly with representatives from PATH, New Jersey Transit and New York Waterway.
