A multifamily home in Paterson was evacuated on Friday due to structural concerns.
Firefighters responded to the house along North Third Street to help get everyone outside.
City officials say that the three-story home is leaning to the right. There are also cracks in the walls and floorboards.
Officials say the Paterson Building Department inspected the site three weeks ago and told the property owner to make repairs before the 30 tenants moved back in. But they say that these repairs were never made.
Some tenants say that they now have no place to go.
"I don't know what we are going to do. I have my daughter and my grandson staying with me. My daughter just lost her job, and my grandson is not working. I'm the only income,” says Carlene Ritter. “We need some kind of help. We were staying here because the rent was reasonable."
The tenants say that they were told by the property owner that they won’t receive financial help finding a place to stay.
They say that they hope that Paterson officials can help them find some type of housing assistance.
