One person was killed and one person was injured in a house explosion in South River, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say 62-year-old Kevin Gilbert was killed in the explosion. Another man was seriously injured and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately made clear.

Officials say that the explosion happened just after 7 p.m. Thursday at a home located on Continental Court.

Photos posted on social media show that the home was leveled, and it appears that the fire spread to other homes. Some News 12 viewers in nearby Sayreville said that they felt their homes shake and thought that there was another earthquake.

Officials say neighbors were evacuated as a precaution.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
