The Newark Fire Department is mourning the tragic loss of one of its finest. Off-duty firefighter Renaldo Martinez was killed Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle was cut off near Branchbrook Park. The 25-year-old was thrown from the bike and was pronounced dead at University Hospital. Martinez was with Newark Fire Department?s Ladder Company 10 for just five years, but his fellow firefighters say he made a lasting impression. The flag is being flown at half-staff at Ladder 10, where Marintez was known fondly as Ray, chicken hawk and pit bull for his enthusiasm about life and about being a Newark firefighter. Charges have not yet been filed against the driver of the car that turned in front of Martinez.
