The Jersey Shore town called Gods Square Mile, better known as Ocean Grove, is giving in to Sunday morning beach access for the first time in 155 years — but officials say the battle is not over.
The Department of Environmental Protection ordered the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association to have the beaches open between 9 a.m. and noon on Sunday mornings. However, Ocean Grove leaders did not want to. They are fighting over it in court, but the issue is on hold in the courts. So, rather than face fines from the state, Ocean Grove surrendered.
The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association released a statement saying in part that they will challenge the order “to preserve our property rights and religious freedom.”
So, for now, those who choose Ocean Grove for their beach getaway will now have access to the sand every Sunday morning until further notice.
