Investigators say a 75-year-old man was found dead surrounded by unknown hazardous chemicals inside his Cypress Hills apartment Wednesday afternoon.
Police say they were called for a wellness check after neighbors complained of a strong odor in an apartment at 25 101st Ave.
Once officers made their way inside, they say they found the man dead sitting in a chair and surrounded by canisters of chemicals labeled as hazardous.
The FBI and Department of Environmental Protection are now involved in the investigation to find out why those chemicals were in the apartment. Agencies did not find any poisons in the air quality from the chemicals and did not have to evacuate anyone.
Authorities say the 75-year-old’s body was very decomposed. They suspect that he may have been sitting there for at least a week.
Neighbors say the man’s name was John and that he was well-loved by those who knew him for the many years he lived in the neighborhood.
There is no word on the exact cause of death.
