Nonprofit pays off layaway items for Kmart shoppers
A nonprofit group is surprising more than a dozen families this holiday season by paying off gifts placed on layaway are the Kmart store in Kearny.
The group, Pay Away the Layaway, operates across the country.
"A lot of the families here think they're just coming in for a $25 gift card, and we're here to surprise them," says Eric Schwartz, a volunteer. "We're going to pay off their entire layaway balance."
The group looked for customers who had items for children on their layaway lists.
