With spring coming in a few days, it's pothole season in New Jersey.
The NJDOT's annual statewide pothole repair campaign started March 17.
This year there might be even more potholes because of the weather. The NJDOT expects to repair more potholes this season than last year.
Potholes are created by water getting into cracks in the asphalt and then expanding when it freezes. This winter was active, and we did fluctuate between above and below freezing a lot.
“The New Jersey Department of Transportation is beginning our annual pothole campaign on Monday, March 17. Over the next couple of months our priority will be repairing the most significant potholes from this winter,” Commissioner O’Connor said. “NJDOT crews work year-round to repair potholes and keep our highways in good condition, but at this time of year, it becomes our primary focus.”
The New Jersey Department of Transportation may close roadways as necessary to make repairs between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
In the past five fiscal years (FY20 – FY24), NJDOT has repaired an average of approximately 153,000 potholes per year.
So far in FY25 (July 1, 2024 – March 13, 2025), NJDOT has repaired about 89,100 potholes, with the busiest pothole repair season just starting.
