A man riding a NJ Transit bus from Newark to Bloomfield got more than a ride Monday after a bus driver allegedly stabbed him over a fare dispute.
According to NJ Transit, the victim got on the bus at Newark Penn Station with his girlfriend and paid for a one-zone fare. Transit officials say when the bus crossed into Bloomfield, the driver asked the victim to pay an override charge for entering a second zone. After words were allegedly exchanged, the man?s girlfriend paid the override charge.
NJ Transit says when the bus stopped in Bloomfield, the passenger apparently spat in the driver?s face. The driver then allegedly retaliated by stabbing the man in the shoulder. The victim was taken to University Hospital in Newark. The driver was arrested and charged with assault. NJ Transit says the driver will not be scheduled to work until after an administrative hearing is held.
