(AP) - A North Jersey community is suing to try to stop a sex industry convention from taking place at the nearby Meadowlands Exposition Center.
Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell said Monday that the town has filed suit in Superior Court to try to block the exposition center from hosting the conference, EXXXOTICA New York, which is scheduled to open on Friday.
The three-day event features seminars about sex, pornography and adult businesses. There also are stage performances and exhibits by makers of sex toys.
Victory Tradeshow Management says the convention is open only to people 18 or older and poses no threat to the surrounding community.
But town officials say the event violates state law prohibiting certain sexual activities in establishments with a liquor license and that the convention hall is too close to a preschool facility.
