Confusing text messages labeled by the New Jersey secretary of state as “misinformation” were sent to voters on Monday.
This comes as voters across the state headed out this past weekend for in-person early voting. It set a new record at 10 locations throughout Monmouth County.
“Saturday, we did very well. We exceeded our numbers, as opposed to last year, by about 1,000 voters,” says Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon.
But text messages sent Monday by the group Voting Futures caused some confusion. The group says they sent images of drop boxes and early voting locations, which some voters may have confused with their Election Day polling locations.
Secretary of State Tahesha Way says the texts are “misinformation.”
"Voters should know that your state and county election officials are the best source for trusted, verified information about our elections...We strongly caution voters against relying upon unverified sources when making a plan to vote,” Way wrote in a statement.
Similar texts went out to voters in Kansas, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia.
“We do want everyone to go out and vote. And also we try our best to cut down on misinformation every single year,” Hanlon says.
Hanlon’s office said Monmouth County had an additional 2,000 early voters by Monday afternoon.
“Reaching people who don’t necessarily vote all the time or are busy on Election Day,” she says.
Hanlon says voters shouldn’t share unverified information about the election.
“I don’t believe people have ill intent. They just have bad information and then it gets shared,” she says.
The Secretary of State’s office says voters can call the state voter information and protection hotline at 1-877-NJ-VOTER or visit www.Vote.NJ.Gov.
