Many New Jersey drivers already know they spend a lot in tolls each year. What many may not know is that New York and New Jersey drivers pay nearly one-third of all the tolls collected in the country, according to a recent report.

The report, released by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, shows that $13 billion was collected in tolls in 2013 across the 35 states that have at least one toll road. Of that $13 billion, $4 billion came from drivers in New York and New Jersey.

According to the report, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority collected $1.4 billion in tolls and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey collected $1.3 billion. Experts say the area's high population and large number of crossings contribute to the amount of revenue collected.

The Port Authority is expected to raise tolls by $1 in December. This is part of a planned toll hike that was approved four years ago.
