Some New Jersey motorists are questioning a plan to close a four-mile stretch of Route 78 for construction. The eastbound express lanes between Route 24 in Springfield and the Garden State Parkway will be closed beginning this weekend. The westbound express lanes will close a week later. As both sets of express lanes are being rebuilt and repaved because of deterioration, drivers will have to remain patient. Many motorists want to know why the work cannot be done during night hours. Department of Transportation officials say by closing the lanes they will save money and shave at least a year off the project.
