(07/17/06) TRENTON ? Motor Vehicle Commission officials may start letting some New Jersey drivers slide when it comes to minor inspection failures.
In an effort to cut costs, 33 minor infractions may be cut from a list of failure criteria. Instead of failing inspections, drivers would get warnings to fix the problems. Some of the infractions include cracked headlights and broken windshield wipers. Many drivers say they like the move because it eliminates the hassle of getting their cars re-inspected.
However, union members aren?t as enthusiastic as the drivers. About 100 inspectors would likely lose their jobs if the proposal moves forward. Many people have also raised questions about the safety of allowing vehicles with minor problems on the road. If it gains enough support, the measure could be in place by next year.
