New Jersey legislators from both political parties are mourning the death of John McCain.

The Arizona senator and former presidential candidate died late Saturday after battling brain cancer.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says McCain brought an overlooked part of politics to Congress. Murphy released a statement that says in part, "In the Senate, he embodied the very American notion that we could disagree without losing our commonality...that we could compromise on policy without abandoning our principles -- something that is rapidly becoming in short supply."

Former Gov. Chris Christie tweeted that McCain stood up for him during a difficult part of his life. Christie says he will "always be indebted to him for that."

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez tweeted similar sentiments. He called it a privilege to work with McCain and said that America is a "better place" because of him.

McCain's casket will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda and a funeral service will be held at Washington National Cathedral.

Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are both expected to give eulogies.

The New York Times reported that Vice President Mike Pence is invited to the funeral, but President Donald Trump is not.
