New Jersey Department of Homeland Security Director Jared Maples says that there are a lot of rumors and misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
In some cases, Maples says foreign entities are deliberately releasing false information about the virus and the United States government’s response to it – such as false information about the possibility of martial law.
Maples says that other rumors surround drugs that can be used to treat the virus or medication that can be deadly if taken while someone is infected.
The director says that there are also scams surrounding testing and the federal stimulus benefits.
The department has set up a website dedicated to dispelling these rumors.
