New Jersey farmers could soon get financial help after a spring freeze devastated crops across the state.

A bill moving through the State House would provide $60 million in state aid to farmers who suffered losses from the freeze.

At Terhune Orchards in Princeton, the damage was significant.

Owner Tannwen Mount says the farm lost 100% of its peaches and cherries, most of its Asian pears and nearly all of its apples. Strawberries and blueberries were also affected.

The freeze came after an unusually warm stretch pushed many trees into bloom. When temperatures dropped in April, blossoms were damaged before the fruit could develop.

The losses also affected Terhune's pick-your-own season — an important part of the farm's business.

Mount says the impact goes beyond the crops themselves, since the farm sells directly to consumers.

State Sen. Parker Space is backing the $60 million proposal. He says many farmers do not have crop insurance to help cover losses.

Supporters say the aid could help farmers recover from a devastating season and keep New Jersey's agricultural industry viable.
