A condominium community in Edgewater is taking a new approach to enforcing pet waste rules — using DNA to track down owners who fail to clean up after their dogs.

At Hudson Harbour, property management has launched a program requiring dog owners to register their pets by submitting a free one-time check swab DNA sample. The genetic information is stored in a database with Pooprints, a part of BioPet Laboratories.

If dog waste is found on common property and not cleaned up, management collects a sample and sends it to a laboratory for testing. The DNA is then compared against registered samples to identify the dog responsible.

"It's really a deterrent; I told you most of the time, we never have repeat offenders. It's like one and done, and they're like lesson learned. Don't want it to happen again," said property manager Christina Ortiz.

If there is a match, the fine is a whopping $250.
