An NHL coach and a New Jersey state trooper are facing charges Tuesday in connection with a nationwide illegal gambling ring that was broken up by New Jersey police.

Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, 41, and New Jersey State Trooper James Harney, 40, are accused of running the multimillion dollar gambling ring. Investigators say Tocchet and Harvey took bets on both collegiate and professional sporting events, and netted more than $1.7 million.

Tocchet, who played 18 years in the NHL, is traveling from Arizona to New Jersey to answer charges of promoting gambling, moneylaundering and conspiracy. Harney, an 8-year police veteran, is charged with official misconduct, promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy. Authorities also say about a dozen current NHL players, a movie star and members of the Bruno-Scarfo crime family may also be involved.
