News 12 sat down with the NYPD to discuss how policing has changed since the How Many Stops Act was passed a few months ago.

The new act has been implemented for a week within the police department and requires the NYPD to document certain information when making a stop, including the person’s race, gender, age, what led to the interaction and if a summons or use of force played a part.

Tarik Sheppard, deputy commissioner for public information at the NYPD, says that following the law is priority No. 1 one for police.

“We implement some online training for officers made little technology tweaks,” said Sheppard, who still has his reservations about the change. “We believe it's going to slow down our officers we believe its unnecessary paperwork."

According to NYPD statistics, overall crime in the Bronx has increased less than 1% from this time last year. In Brooklyn South, crime is down just over 3% and Brooklyn North has seen a nearly 4% decrease in crime.
