The latest additions to the NYPD serving the Bronx and the rest of the city will most likely have the highest number of foreign-born recruits in the department's history.A Daily News report states that there were more than 1,600 recruits in the latest graduating class and 339 were born in another country. That statistic translates to one out of every five new recruits. Most of the recruits came from the Dominican Republic, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Guyana and Poland. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says the graduating class is just like the city, "diverse and energetic." Kelly says the department has been looking for recruits who speak foreign languages under its Language Initiative program. He says many of the new officers will now be able to speak the language of the communities they are serving in.
