Volunteers at the Newburgh LGBTQ Center received awards and a state grant to help them continue their work.
Sen. James Skoufis (D-39th District) presented the awards today outside of his office on Grand Street.
The center does community outreach and provides virtual and emergency relief services to those in need.
Skoufis helped secure $96,000 for the center this year and presented its volunteers with awards for their commitment to the LGBTQ community. "It just feels really uncomfortable accepting an award for just existing and for being queer and just being brown. We do our work with our community because we are trying to survive," says Kk Naimool, of the Newburgh LGBTQ Center.
The center is currently looking for a permanent space to provide in-person services and shelter resources.
