The East Side Red Raiders lace up their skates for practice and head to the ice almost every day, even without an opponent so far this season. For the past season, the team has just scrimmaged against itself.
The practice rink suffered major damage during Tropical Storm Irene. Repairs were not ready for the beginning of the high school hockey season, so the coach was forced to put the season on ice.
The city of Newark has poured $125,000 into recreation center renovations since Hurricane Irene. As for the Red Raiders, they're working to schedule some scrimmages against other high schools when the hockey season ends.
