A Martin Luther King Jr. statue was unveiled during a ceremony in Newark Wednesday.
The eight-foot tall bronze statue shows Dr. King with his arms outstretched and the words "I have a dream" engraved on the pedestal. It is located at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Essex County Deputy Chief of Staff William Payne said that the message on the statute will remind people of Dr. King's accomplishments.
"He should have been honored a long time ago, I'm glad that we are able to make history here today in Essex County," Payne said.
The unveiling also marked the anniversary of Dr. King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly mentioned the statue was the first in New Jersey. There is another statue dedicated to Dr. King in Hackensack.
