A 14-year-old has been charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon in the fatal shooting of a Newark police officer Friday, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens says.
As of Saturday morning, five individuals were in custody and being interviewed. The identity of the five individuals has not been released.
In addition to the two officers, the 14-year-old suspect was also shot.
He is hospitalized and treated for nonlife threatening injuries.
The Essex County Prosecutor shared Newark police officers and federal partners were investigating potential illegal gun activity - and they were working to capture an individual they believed had a weapon.
Officer Azcona did not even have a chance to step out of the vehicle when he was struck.
"Our heart is heavy right now, our agency is hurting. we lost a true hero last night," said Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said the city stands by the hundreds of police officers in Newark who are mourning and grieving.
Funeral plans for Officer Azcona have not been released yet.
The second police officer has nonlife-threatening injuries and is being treated at University Hospital. The injured officer's name will not be released as requested by Newark police, according to the prosecutor's office.
In speaking about the investigation, the Essex county prosecutor spoke about gun violence in the city.
"Obviously any sort of a gun interaction like this is the sort of thing that happens far too often, and we need to do everything we can to make sure we limit those if not eradicate those to the extent that we can," said Essex County Prosecutor Stephens.
