A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday for Newark’s newest school – Nelson Mandela Elementary School.

Students, pre-K through third grade, are already enrolled at the multicampus school on Hartford Street. The plan is to add an additional grade every year up to eighth grade and increase the learning opportunities to fit the needs of every student.

Students in the school’s inaugural kindergarten class at Nelson Mandela were asked to write letters to themselves. Those letters will be placed in a time capsule that will soon be planted in the school's garden. In 20 years, they’ll return to open the time capsule and read back what they wrote.
