A Newark man who shot a pregnant women in her abdomen two years ago was sentenced Thursday.In 2004, Maria Santos was on Summer Avenue in Newark when a fight broke out between two girls. Hector Serrano started firing randomly into the crowd of onlookers striking Santos and a man riding his bike. Surgeons at University Hospital removed 12 inches of intestine and replaced a section of an artery in an effort to save the baby. The .45-caliber bullet was imbedded one inch from the baby. Seven months later, Faith was born without complications.Serrano received 17 1/2 years in prison. His family says he will appeal the sentence.
