Newark man convicted of firing gun at man, chasing him down city street
Prosecutors say the victim was not hit by the gunfire. The 53-year-old defendant faces a possible 10 to 20 years in prison.

A Newark man has been convicted of firing a gun at another man and chasing him down a city street in 2024, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
A jury convicted 53-year-old Shamsuddin Lockett on Aug. 14 of aggravated assault and weapons offenses. Prosecutors said the jury also found him to be a persistent offender, which could increase his sentence.
Prosecutors said Lockett was pacing on Elizabeth Avenue on the morning of Feb. 23, 2024, apparently waiting for someone. Around 7:10 a.m., a man approached from East Alpine Street, Lockett pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired one shot at him.
The man was not hit and ran away. Lockett chased him but could not find him, then left the area and called a car service, according to prosecutors. Surveillance video and cellphone records helped authorities identify and arrest Lockett.
Lockett is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 19 and faces a possible 10 to 20 years in state prison.
