A Newark man is accused of climbing through his ex-girlfriend's apartment window in Hackensack and strangling her during an assault earlier this year.

Ruben P. Vera, 33, was arrested Oct. 8 in Newark and charged with home invasion burglary and aggravated assault by strangulation, according to Hackensack police.

Police said the woman reported that Vera entered her apartment through a kitchen window shortly after midnight on March 1.

According to police, Vera approached the woman, placed both hands around her neck and applied pressure until she became dizzy. He then released his grip and pulled at her pants, prompting her to run to her roommate's bedroom for help.

The roommate intervened, and Vera fled the apartment, police said. The woman called 911 and was taken to a hospital.

Hackensack detectives located Vera at a Newark store on Oct. 8 and arrested him with assistance from Newark police.

Vera was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending his initial court appearance.
