Two women are in critical condition following a fire that tore through a Newark apartment complex late Wednesday night.
Newark firefighters were called to the scene at 93 Riverside Court just after 10 p.m., according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda. Additional crews were called to the scene as flames began to spread to the adjacent building at 94 and 95 Riverside Court, officials said.
As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, two injured women were rescued from the housing units. Both were evaluated by EMS crews on the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Miranda told News 12 the women are both listed in critical condition. No additional information about the victims has been released.
Newark first responders managed to bring the fire under control in less than an hour and prevent the flames from continuing to spread.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Department of Public Safety's Arson Unit.
