Fire officials say flames ripped through a Newark home early Saturday morning, killing one person and severely burning another.
Firefighters believe the blaze broke out around 1 a.m. on the first floor, spreading quickly through the home at 89 Norman Road. According to a family relative, 27-year-old Lorenzo Gaskin died in the flames. His mother, Lena Gaskin, was severely burned.
According to Thomas Ladner, a neighbor who tried to help the Gaskin family escape the flames, he did not see firefighters help Lena Gaskin out of the home and believed she may have jumped from a second-floor window. Lena Gaskin?s brother told News 12 New Jersey she is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Firefighters have yet to determine the cause of the blaze. Officials say the family living in the attached house escaped the flames safely.
