Newark school officials are enforcing a new dress code for its 30,000 elementary students.
The plan to regulate the children's outfits was formally announced at a Wednesday evening hearing at Belmont Runyon Elementary School.
Starting this school year, the young students will have to wear button down and polo shirts. Girls will be required to wear pants or skirts. The uniforms are the first major policy to be implemented by Newark school superintendent Clifford Janey.
"There's some sense of who you are, not defined by how you're dressed," says Janey.
The uniforms are estimated to cost between $20 and $120, depending on how many outfits parents plan on buying.
