Friends and family gathered Sunday to pay their respects to a detective in the Newark Police Department who died of complications from coronavirus.
The funeral for 43-year-old Irving Callender was held at the football field at Shabazz High School.
Callender started his career in 2006 before moving to Mayor Ras Baraka's executive protection unit in 2014.
"He was a man's man," says Lt. Ken Reid, a retired Plainfield police officer. "He loved his family, he loved his children. He was my brother. There's not enough words that can be said as such a person as Irv."
Callender is the 13th New Jersey police officer to die from the coronavirus.
