Authorities say Newark police officer died Saturday after his patrol car flipped over during a pursuit of a suspect.
According to authorities, Sergeant Tommaso Popolozio, 33, joined a chase involving several patrol cars around 4 a.m. Police say the officers were in pursuit of a 22-year-old suspect who had gotten out of his handcuffs in the back seat of a cruiser, taken it over and fled. Popolozio?s car ended up flipping during the high-speed chase. He was taken to University Hospital with severe head injuries and died a short time later, police say.
Authorities say the suspect was found near the scene of the chase later. Mayor Cory Booker called Popolizio's death "the greatest tragedy of my administration."
