A Newark man?s death during an arrest has some people in the community up in arms.
Witnesses gathered at the scene Thursday. They say plain-clothed officers dragged Warren Lee out of his car and struck him on the back, leading to an asthma attack. Residents also say cops refused to call for help as Lee died. Lee?s father claims he wasn?t allowed to see his son?s body at the hospital.
The Newark Police Department has a different account of the incident. The officers say Lee swallowed cocaine and heroin as they approached him, which led to him choking. They also say they were pounding on his back to get the drugs out. Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow says the cops performed the Heimlich maneuver, but were unable to save Lee. The case is under investigation.
