The New York Jets announced its inaugural girls flag football club travel team during their second annual media day for girls high school flag football at MetLife Stadium.
Over 75 high schools participated in the media day event, including two players from the flag football club and their head coach, Mickey McDermott.
"Flag football and what the game of football means and represents is huge and it's just empowering girls to play a sport that they were never able to," he said.
McDermott is also the head coach of the Ridgewood High School flag football team. One of his players, senior Lucia Mastellone, says she was excited to play a sport that she grew up loving.
“Having the opportunity to play a sport that I played all growing up is just awesome," she said.
The team will enter local, regional and national flag football tournaments beginning in the spring.
