The New York State high school sports fall season will be delayed, and fall sports championships are canceled, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced Thursday.
The announcement came via a press release that not only announced the major fall changes, but also mentioned preparations for a condensed season schedule in January 2021 if sports remain off the table through 2020.
If sports are disallowed through the rest of the year, winter sports would be played Jan. 4 through March 13, 2021, fall sports would run March 1 through May 8 and spring sports would go from April 5 through June 12.
The state association notes that girls tennis will be moved to the spring, and that wrestling and cheer may have to be pushed to a later session due to their high-risk nature.

For now, the delay moves the current start date for fall sports to Sept. 21, 2020. The NYSPHSAA says there could be scenario for a few low-risk high school sports starting on that date, like swimming, golf and tennis.
The release also mentions that high school sports schedules could be based on a location, not by school size.
