The new year is bringing higher fees for commuters crossing Port Authority bridges and tunnels.
The 3% Port Authority toll hike went into effect just after midnight Jan. 4, making those heading back to school and work after the holiday break on Monday the first to face the increase.
Drivers will pay $16.79 with an E-ZPass during peak hours, while off-peak E-ZPass travelers will see a jump to $14.79.

The changes apply to the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the George Washington, Bayonne and Goethals bridges and the Outerbridge Crossing.
The Port Authority lists peak hours as 6 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
“So customed to just paying the rate that it doesn’t even matter,” one driver said Sunday in Jersey City near the Holland Tunnel.
Those without E-ZPass will pay more than $23 for the pay-by-plate option.
The rate hike affects eastbound traffic.
More information about the toll increases can be found on the Port Authority website.
