A new proposal to raise the maximum fine for texting while driving is making its way through the Maryland General Assembly.
The new law would give judges the discretion to fine drivers up to $500.
Fines currently begin at $75.
Each year, there’s an estimated 30,000 cellphone violations issued in Maryland.
