? There is a new law in effect that boaters need to know to legally stay afloat in New Jersey waters this Memorial Day weekend.
People born in 1969 or after have to be certified by June 1, 2006. State police say boaters have to take a one-day class that covers seamanship, safety, rules of the water and how to navigate a channel. A written exam follows the class. Many New Jersey residents are in favor of the new law.
Police also say all children 12 and under onboard have to wear a personal flotation device at all times.
