3ds agoNew Jersey's infrastructure is taking a significant leap forward with the construction of the new Portal North Bridge, which will provide more reliable rail service between New Jersey and New York City.
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 825 is playing a vital role in the project, with hundreds of union members working on the bridge.
According to Greg Lalevee, Business Manager of IUOE Local 825, the project is not only creating jobs but also tackling one of the region's most critical rail bottlenecks.
The current Portal Bridge is over 110 years old and is one of the busiest rail bridges in the world. When it is opened to allow marine traffic or gets stuck, train traffic comes to a halt.
The new bridge is expected to open in 2026, with the full project completed by 2027. The project has become a symbol of economic opportunity and better days for New Jersey commuters.
