(05/16/06) TRENTON ? State University leaders went before lawmakers Tuesday in an effort to prevent massive cuts to education funding.
The meeting took place in response to Governor Jon Corzine?s (D-NJ) proposed $169 million in education cuts. University leaders told lawmakers they are doing everything they can to keep spending under control. School officials say if the cuts go through, they will be forced to raise tuitions.
Many college students attended the roundtable discussion in a show of support for the universities. Although they weren?t able to speak, the students say their presence got the point across. Several university leaders say they expect some form of education cuts. However, they hope it can be reduced from Corzine?s proposed number of $169 million.
