The New Jersey Devils are resigned to shift their focus on the future beyond this season in the wake of veteran forwards Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac getting traded to the New York Islanders.
The selling off of talent was not unexpected given both players were in the final years of their contracts, and with New Jersey having fallen out of playoff contention.
Their departures led to defenseman Damon Severson expressing frustration over the team entering yet another rebuilding phase.
The emphasis now is for New Jersey to build around its young core of players, led by recently named captain Nico Hischier.
