A New Brunswick man is being praised for his swift actions to help save a teenage girl.
Sunny Jorge is a hip-hop artist by day. He was in East Orange for a session at a studio on Central Avenue when he heard screaming coming from above.
“I heard a long cry, ‘Help! Someone help me,’ and I looked up and saw she was on the top of the building,” Jorge says.
He says he didn’t think twice before jumping into action.
“I’m banging on the door, pushing bells…’I’m coming. I’m coming,’” Jorge says.
He was able to get to the roof door and found a 13-year-old girl in the cold rain. He escorted her back to the ground floor, where her mother owns a clothing store.
East Orange police say the teen had gone up to the roof to get some air and got locked out.
The building superintendent tells News 12 New Jersey that the building recently upgraded the doors on the roof to make them more secure and to make it more difficult for anyone to get in from the top.
Police say the teen was locked outside for only about three minutes.
“Whatever the risk was of going up there, it had to be done for the simple fact that I’d want it done for my kid, as a father,” Jorge says.
News 12 reached out to the teen’s mother for comment but has not heard back.
