Two more rock-throwing incidents have been reported in the last two days along Route 22, bringing the total number to 27 since the beginning of June.
Police say the criminal acts have turned a two-mile stretch of the highway in Union County, from Newark to Union, into one of New Jersey's most dangerous. Witnesses say kids hiding in trees or on overpasses have been hurling rocks at cars below as they pass underneath. The situation has turned a routine commute to work into a fearful journey for some.
"I am afraid to drive to work thinking people are throwing rocks," says Ninoska Perez, of Hillside. "People can get hurt doing that."
So far, no one has been seriously hurt, but residents say it's only a matter of time before that changes.
"They are playing a dangerous game, messing with people's lives," says Charles Mims, of Newark. "I've seen a lot of incidents happen right here, it is definitely a dangerous game."
Police say they have beefed up patrols along the highway in an effort to catch the rock throwers. Crime Stoppers is also offering a $5,000 for information leading to those responsible. Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 908-654-8477.
